Concacaf League
Canadian Premier League club Forge FC have made history on Tuesday night. The Hamilton-based club overcame a first-leg 1-3 defeat to beat Santos de Guápiles FC 3-0 at the Tim Hortons Field to reach the Concacaf League final. The result means that Forge FC become the first CPL side to qualify for the Concacaf Champions League.
Despite their 1-3 deficit in the first leg, the team coached by Bobby Smyrniotis always seemed in full control of their destiny, patiently dissecting the visitors from Costa Rica. Striker Omar Browne opened the scoring in the 28th minute for Forge FC. That goal halved the lead but even after going up Forge FC stayed patient and it was not until the second half that Mo Babouli would give the Canadians the aggregate lead. The midfielder scored in the 65th minute with a wonderful volley.
That goal gave Forge FC the aggregate lead and forced the Costa Ricans to go on the attack. Defensive gaps meant that the CPL team now had room to counter and in the 82nd minute Joshua Navarro made it 3-0 sealing the Canadian club’s passage to the final and a spot in the 2022 Concacaf Champions League.
