On deadline day
Major League Soccer club Vancouver Whitecaps have acquired Florian Jungwirth from the San Jose Earthquakes. Multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed the trade to Transfermarkt on Thursday. The 32-year-old defender will join the club in exchange for $200,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) and up to an additional $100,000 GAM if certain conditions are met.
The Whitecaps were also looking into the possibility of signing Alexis Duarte from Cerro Porteño. But sources have told Transfermarkt that the club did not feel comfortable about the last-minute deal and the amount of time it would take to integrate the Paraguayan. Duarte remains an option for the winter, the ‘Caps, in principle have a deal in place with his club.
Jungwirth can, therefore, be seen as a stopgap until the new season. The 32-year-old is an MLS veteran that will bolster the defense. The 1860 Munich youth product and former German youth international is a veteran that knows the league. Furthermore, he holds a green card, which means that he will not occupy an international spot.
