Erik ten Hag has dismissed any talk of Raphael Varane leaving Manchester United as ‘rumours’.

The French defender has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford alongside fellow former Real Madrid star Casemiro.

talkSPORT understands incoming part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe sees their signings as poor recruitment decisions, which could ultimately lead to their departures.

Now, though, Ten Hag has rubbished claims the Frenchman is leaving.

That’s despite his relationship with senior players, including Varane, being less than harmonious.

When asked about the situation with the 2018 World Cup winner, he said: “I don’t know what you’re talking about.

“It’s rumours. Very important player, but there’s internal competition and there should be at a top club, as we are.

“And when you decide on two players who do brilliant – Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire – you also have to make a choice for that position.”

Varane signed for the Red Devils from Real Madrid in 2021 for £34million.

The 30-year-old has gone on to make 75 appearances for Man United since, winning the Carabao Cup with the club last season.

This season, he’s started just four out of the nine Premier League games he’s played.

He sat on the bench for the 3-0 Manchester derby defeat to Man City, with Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire starting instead.

Man United return to action in the Premier League against Everton, who were hit with a 10-point points deduction over the break, at Goodison Park on Sunday.
