Erik ten Hag’s hopes of a Premier League respite from their Champions League plight were soon dashed by Newcastle.

The Magpies tore the Red Devils to pieces in the opening half of their 1-0 win with 14 shots to two, and Ten Hag had an easy target to air his frustrations.

Seen berating Anthony Martial just before the break and waving his arms in frustration, he later called time on the Frenchman in the 61st minute, six minutes after Anthony Gordon’s opener.

That means it’s been three years since Martial last completed a full match in the league, but the Man who replaced him, Rasmus Hojlund, didn’t fare much better either.

Both no.9s faltering is certainly an issue for Ten Hag, and one that he may not be able to solve.

Reacting to the Dutchman’s lack of ability to change the course of the game, talkSPORT chief football correspondent Alex Crook summed up the mood in worrying fashion.

“I’ve defended ten Hag as the issues at Man United are deep rooted,” he said.

“But he isn’t helping himself. He looks lost on the touchline.”

Crook also added: “The Manchester United manager is the only person in the World who didn’t see that goal coming.

“Incredible he didn’t make changes at half-time. [Marcus] Rashford and Martial passengers throughout the evening.”
