Christopher Nkunku is currently on the sideline with a torn knee ligament that will keep the French forward out of the World Cup in Qatar. But despite the injury, which the 25-year-old suffered just days ahead of the World Cup while training with the French national team, a move from RB Leipzig to Chelsea is still very much on the table. Transfermarkt, in fact, can confirm a report by CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs that a deal is agreed upon in principle between all parties.

Speculations about a potential deal have been ongoing since the fall when reports suggested that Nkunku had a Chelsea medical outside of Frankfurt last August. As part of the medical, Chelsea reportedly also agreed a deal in principle with the French forward and his club RB Leipzig. That deal will be in the region of €70 million, just €10 million below his current market value, which makes him the joint second most valuable player in the Bundesliga.

After coming off a spectacular season in which he scored 20 goals and 15 assists in 34 Bundesliga games, Nkunku signed a new contract until the end of the 2025/26 season last June. The striker has since carried his form into the new season as he leads the Bundesliga with 12 goals in 15 games. Nkunku has also scored three goals in six Champions League games and has been a big part of a remarkable turnaround under new head coach Marco Rose.

After a poor start under Domenico Tedesco, Rose has turned results around, qualifying for the round of 16 of the Champions League and going into the Bundesliga break in third place. Nkunku’s scoring has been a big part of the success as the Frenchman scored in the final UCL games against Real Madrid and Shakhtar and also scored five goals in his last five Bundesliga games.
Nonetheless, it now appears that Leipzig will allow Nkunku to leave for €70m next summer. In Benjamin Sesko from Red Bull Salzburg, Leipzig already have a center-forward lined up, and the arrival of Timo Werner from Chelsea in the summer should further compensate for what could become the most expensive outgoing transfer in Leipzig’s history.
