Gordon and Elliott in top 10
The transfer fee of €80.4 million paid by Chelsea to Leicester made centre-back Wesley Fofana the world’s second most expensive transfer last summer, only Antony’s move from Ajax to Manchester United cost more. Since then, the 21-year-old Frenchman has made two appearances for the Blues, in each of which he played the full distance.
However, five-time U-21 international Fofana still has to wait for his debut in the Équipe Tricolore, and that despite the fact that head coach Didier Deschamps is struggling with injury problems in defence ahead of the upcoming Nations League clashes with Austria and Denmark. With a market value of €65m, he thus remains the most valuable player who has never been nominated for his home country’s senior squad.

At defending titleholders France, the list of absentees is long two months before the start of the World Cup: Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kanté, Kingsley Coman, Presnel Kimpembe, Lucas Hernández, Karim Benzema, Ibrahima Konaté and Thomas Lemar are currently not available to Deschamps due to injury. For the defensive centre, where the absence of Bayern Munich’s Hernández, who has recently been playing alongside Raphaël Varane, weighs heavily, the 53-year-old nominated Arsenal’s William Saliba, Barcelona’s summer signing Jules Koundé and Bayern’s Dayot Upamecano, among others, as possible alternatives instead of Fofana. Back in June, the 1998 World Cup winner had chosen Liverpool’s Konaté over him, but reportedly only because the then Leicester defender was celebrating his wedding during the international break.
No England call-up: Gordon among most valuable non-internationals
However, Fofana is not the only Frenchman still waiting for a call-up to his country’s senior squad. In Allan Saint-Maximin, Amine Gouiri, Martin Terrier, Evan Ndicka, Robin Le Normand and Hugo Ekitiké, the top 10 of the most valuable non-internationals alone features seven compatriots of the Chelsea player. The second dominant nation in the rankings is England, where Anthony Gordon, Harvey Elliott and Jack Harrison, among others, have yet to be called up to the Three Lions’ senior squad by head coach Gareth Southgate. Further Premier League players on the list include Arsenal’s Fábio Vieira (Portugal), Joelinton (Brazil) of Newcastle and Southampton youngster Roméo Lavia (Belgium), who, like Fofana and Gordon, was among the biggest winners of the most recent market value update in the English top tier.
