Amidst EPL interest

The rumour mill regarding Timo Werner has been rampant with Newcastle United among the Premier League clubs heavily linked for a move of the Chelsea striker. They are, however, not the only club interested in the forward. Werner’s former Bundesliga club RB Leipzig are also hopeful that the German national team striker could opt to rekindle his scoring touch at the Kotterweg in Leipzig.

“I hope he is coming back; he is a good player,” Werner’s former teammate Yussuf Poulsen said at a press conference to international media the day ahead of the DFL Supercup final against Bayern Munich. “We are a team that is trying to take the next step and develop into one of the biggest clubs in Europe. … You need quality players for that. We formed a good partnership in the past.”

Leipzig, in fact, have been strengthening the squad significantly. Transfermarkt can confirm reports that the club has signed David Raum from Hoffenheim. The German national team left-back could be presented as part of the Supercup festivities on Saturday. With Raum secured, could the club move for Werner next?

Timo Werner to Leipzig: “He is a good player”

Club sources did not deny that Leipzig are working on a return of the 26-year-old Chelsea striker. “He is a good player and, of course, we would like him back,” one club source said with a big smile on their face. Leipzig sold Werner in 2020 for €53 million—the second highest fee received in club history.

Werner is seen as key to add speed and depth to an attack that is supposed to compete in three competitions next season. But it is also understood that a transfer is difficult. Werner earns over €15 million a season at Chelsea and would have to give up money to facilitate a return to Germany.
