Spanish midfielder
Saúl Ñíguez is apparently leaving Spanish titleholders Atlético to join Chelsea on Deadline Day after all. While the BBC reports about optimism at the Champions League winners regarding the transfer, Fabrizio Romano writes on Twitter that only details are still missing. The 26-year-old midfielder is on his way to London, where he is expected to sign a loan contract with an option to buy.
Update, 11:49 pm CET: Chelsea have confirmed the signing on Tuesday night. According to Romano, Saúl will join the Blues on an initial loan deal (fee: €5 million) with an option to buy worth €40 million.
The volume of the star transfer reportedly amounts to €40 million, a sum in line with market value – €5 million as a loan fee, €35 million as an option at the end of the season. Ñíguez, who is still under contract with his youth club until 2026, had been linked with a move for weeks, including to Manchester United.
