After two loans

Chelsea have once again generated money on the transfer market by selling Davide Zappacosta to Atalanta. The Italian Champions League club announced the transfer of the 29-year-old right-back on Tuesday. Zappacosta has signed a contract that will keep him at the club until 2025. The fee will be around €9 million.

Including the transfers of U23 players Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Valentino Livramento (Southampton), Chelsea have generated €121 million in the market this summer—more than the €115 million they paid for record signing Romelu Lukaku

Zappacosta joined Chelsea for €25 million from Torino in 2017 and collected four assists in 52 games. The 13-times Italian national team player won the championship with Chelsea in 2018 and the Europa League in 2019 but struggled for playing time the following years. The last two seasons he spent on loan at Roma and Genoa CFC

It is Zappacosta’s second stint at Atalanta. The Bergamaschi signed the attacking-minded defender in 2011 from Isola Liri for the club’s U19 squad and developed him into a Serie A player. In 2015 he was sold for €4.3 million to Torino. At Atalanta, Zappacosta is now competing with Joakim Maehle and Hans Hateboer for a position in the starting XI.
