Chelsea make gigantic offer for Gvardiol – Record fee for RB Leipzig center-back?

Record deal in place?

With the departures of Antonio Rüdiger (to Real Madrid) and Andreas Christensen (Barcelona), RB Leipzig’s center-back Josko Gvardiol has become the object of desire for Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel. But the Bundesliga club have rejected any offer for the 20-year-old center-back. According to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have made a significant offer for the Croatian national team defender. The offered deal would make Gvardiol the second most expensive Bundesliga transfer after Ousmane Dembélé, and the most expensive center-back in history.

Dembélé left Dortmund for Barcelona ahead of the 2017/18 season for €140 million, including add-ons. Chelsea have offered €90 million for Gvardiol. The Croatian would be initially loaned back to the Bundesliga side. The Blues have already spent €186 this window and are also in advanced talks to sign Wesley Fofana for €87 million from Leicester. That deal is now nearing completion.

“I can confirm that there has been increased interest from many clubs,” Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff said to Sky ahead of Leipzig’s DFB Pokal match against Teutonia Ottensen. “I can confirm that Gvardiol will play for us this season and likely also next season.” Transfermarkt, however, understands that a Chelsea offer of that category would be seriously considered by the club as Leipzig would have at least a full season to find a replacement.

Gvardiol to Chelsea – RB Leipzig want to strengthen defense

The Croatian national team defender has played 50 games (2 goals and four assists) since joining Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb for €18.8 million last summer. But the Golden Boy nominee has featured no longer than 45 minutes in Leipzig’s first four Bundesliga games of the season. Head coach Domenico Tedesco has been unhappy with his defense overall, and the club might add a player ahead of Thursday’s deadline day. Selling Gvardiol now could offer Leipzig some interesting financial possibilities in this regard.
