Brighton recieve record fee

Chelsea have completed a rather audacious move for Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella, after both clubs confirmed a transfer that would see the Spaniard make the move to Stamford Bridge and sign a six-year deal. According to reports in England, the former Barcelona youth prospect could cost the Blues as much as £60 million (€71m), with an initital transfer fee of £55m with £5m in add ons. In a statement, Brighton confirmed that the defender leaves the club as their record sale, meaning Cucurella was sold for more than the €58.5m Ben White cost Arsenal in 2021.

“I’m really happy,” said Cucurella in an interview with the Chelsea website. “It’s a big opportunity for me to join one of the best clubs in the world and I’m going to work hard to be happy here and help the team.” Cucurella’s move to Stamford Bridge now means that he becomes Chelsea’s sixth most expensive signing ever, behind Christian Pulisic’s move from Borussia Dortmund in 2018. However the defender can lay claim to being the club’s most expensive defender ever, surpassing £45m spent on Ben Chilwell in 2020. “Marc is an elite defender of proven Premier League quality and he further strengthens our squad going into the new season,” said Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly. “We continue to work on and off the pitch, and we’re delighted Marc will be a part of the present and future at Chelsea.”

Fans of the London club will be delighted to see their side making serious moves in the transfer window, following a notable slow start to the summer off-season which was in part due to Chelsea’s change in ownership. However, Cucurella not only makes the move to Chelsea as their third signing of the summer but also after some serious competition from Manchester City. According to reports in England, the Premier League champions were unwilling to match Brighton’s sale price, which Chelsea have now clearly been happy to match.

There’s little doubt that Cucurella has gone from strength to strength in recent seasons, having left his boyhood club Barcelona as recently as 2020 when Getafe signed the defender for £10.6m. The full-back then made the move to the Premier League in 2021 for a modest fee of £16m, which means Brighton will make an extensive profit on a defender that only made 38 appearances for the club. Which has undoubtedly been showcased in the player’s market value, which recently shot up from €20m to €28m.
