Huge transfer profit for BVB

Chelsea are apparently not giving up in the race to sign Erling Haaland. Following a report in the Mirror last week that the Champions League winners were prepared to pay Borussia Dortmund €175 million for their top scorer, Bild now reports that Chelsea boss Roman Abramovich has actually “approved” this amount to bring the Norwegian to London in this transfer period. It would be the second highest transfer fee ever paid for a footballer. In 2017, Neymar had moved from FC Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain for €222 million.

BVB sporting director Michael Zorc told Bild on Friday: “Nothing has changed. We are planning with Erling for the new season.” But for BVB, a sale of Haaland this summer would mean a total income of around €277 million: The transfer of Jadon Sancho to Manchester United for €85 million is only a formality. In addition, Dortmund sold Leonardo Balerdi to Olympique Marseille for €11 million, Jeremy Toljan to US Sassuolo for €3.5 million and Sergio Gómez to RSC Anderlecht for €2.25 million.

Haaland arrived for €20 million from RB Salzburg in January 2020 and signed a contract with Borussia until June 30, 2024, but it is rumoured that the deal includes a release clause that states that he can leave the club for a transfer fee of €75 million as early as the summer of 2022.

At this point at the latest, Chelsea will face competition from numerous top clubs, which they probably want to pre-empt this year by paying €100 million more. If a transfer of this magnitude really happens, Haaland would not only become the most expensive signing in Premier League history, but also the player who generated the biggest transfer profit for a club worldwide.
