Philadelphia Union benefit

Leeds United have signed American star Brenden Aaronson from Red Bull Salzburg. Aaronson has signed a contract until the summer of 2027. The fee will be in the region of €28 million ($30 million), which makes him one of the five most expensive outgoing transfers in Salzburg’s history. It is also the second most ever spent for a US national team player. Only Christian Pulisic—for €64 million from Dortmund to Chelsea in 2019—was more expensive.

Aaronson’s former club Philadelphia Union will also benefit from the transfer. According to MLSSoccer.com, the Union will receive 10-20% of the fee. Sources have told Philadelphia Inquirer writer Jonathan Tannewald that the exact fee the Union will receive is $5 million. The additional fee makes Aaronson the fourth most expensive outgoing transfer in MLS history together with Bayern Munich star and former Vancouver Whitecap Alphonso Davies (overview).

Brenden Aaronson to Leeds United – Among top 3 transfers

At Leeds United, in the meantime, Aaronson, who scored six goals and ten assists in 41 games across all competitions for Salzburg last season, also moves into the top three of most expensive signings. Only Rodrigo (from Valencia) and Daniel James (from Manchester United) were more expensive. At Leeds United, where the San Fransisco 49ers ownership group holds a significant share, Aaronson will be reunited with former Salzburg head coach Jesse Marsch. The American manager took over in the spring and kept the club in the Premier League.
