“We know we are rock bottom; we can’t feel any worse than this,” Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær said after his club’s 5-0 defeat to Liverpool. Solskjær was right; it was a low point. A look in the Transfermarkt database shows that since market values were introduced in 2004, a club with a matchday squad value of €300 million or more has never had a higher home defeat than the Red Devils on October 24, 2021.
Among the top clubs that have suffered significant defeats at home are also Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Barcelona, and Borussia Dortmund—all of them have at least once lost 1-4 or higher. The Red Devils and Bayern were most often responsible for their home fans’ disappointment.
