Almada to arrive in the winter?
Major League Soccer side Atlanta United appear to have lost out on signing Thiago Almada this summer. The Five Stripes had a deal in place with Vélez Sarsfield but a deal appears to be structurally impossible as the deadline approaches. Transfermarkt can confirm reports by L’Équipe (cited via GFFN) and MLSSoccer.com writer Tom Bogert that Atlanta have a backup plan and are in advanced talks with Lille to sign winger Luiz Araújo.
Signing Araújo from cash-strapped Lille would salvage a chaotic last few days as Atlanta were desperate to add pieces to a roster that is a long way away from the once all-conquering championship side, the club’s bosses build upon entering the league. First, there was the pursuit of super talent Almada. That deal was all but agreed, but the salary cap structure made a deal now impossible. It is, however, understood that a winter transfer remains likely.
Atlanta also failed to sign Braga winger Ricardo Horta. On Aug. 3, Braga released a statement that Horta had refused a move to MLS. Braga were, therefore, forced to turn down the $17.8 million offer for the 26-year-old forward.

Now the latest target is Araújo. The 25-year-old Brazilian winger would arrive from Ligue 1 champion Lille where he scored four goals and two assists in 28 league games last season. Araújo is expected to cost in the region of $12 million, which would make him the third most expensive signing in club history just behind Ezequiel Barco.

Barco, in fact, will be a major part of the club’s future restructuring. For the club to bring in more significant pieces, like Almada, the Five Stripes will have to move on from the 22-year-old Argentine—Barco cost €13.5 million when he was signed from Independiente in 2018.
