Norwegian record fee

After six and a half years and a total of only eleven appearances for Real Madrid’s first team, the chapter in the Spanish capital is closed for Martin Ødegaard. Arsenal have announced the permanent signing of the Norwegian playmaker. “We thought it was goodbye…” the Gunners wrote in a video announcing the return of the 22-year-old, who has already spent the last six months of the 2020/21 season in London on loan.

According to The Athletic, Arsenal will pay a transfer fee of €35 million plus €5 million in possible add-ons. Real Madrid have made a transfer profit of at least €36 million since buying Ødegaard from Strømsgodset IF in January 2015 until selling him to Arsenal. The record titleholders paid €2.8 million for the then 16-year-old and subsequently also earned €4 million in loan fees from Real Sociedad and the Gunners. Ødegaard just makes it into the top ten most expensive signings at Arsenal and sets a new record fee for a Norwegian footballer.

For Arsenal, the midfielder is the fourth external addition of the summer and the transfer fee sees the Londoners jump to third in the ranking of the world’s highest spending clubs, now at €119 million. However, this amount will soon rise again – as soon as the transfer of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale (Sheffield United) is official, Arsenal will occupy first place.

The Norwegian has played the most senior games for loan club SC Heerenveen, while his strongest performances followed in the Real Sociedad shirt in 2019/20. In the end, but Ødegaard did not have a real chance to make the breakthrough at Los Blancos.
