Overmars confirms

Ajax Amsterdam and goalkeeper André Onana will go their separate ways next summer. Sporting director Marc Overmars confirmed on Tuesday that the club has walked away from contract negotiations. “We tried, but it didn’t work out,” the sporting director said ahead of Ajax’s Champions League game against Besiktas

“We make decisions that have to be agreed by both sides,” Overmars said to Ziggo Sport (cited via VI). “We didn’t feel that that was what he wanted. I have read somewhere that we pulled the plug, and that is true. There are good reasons for it.” Onana has recently said that a new contract was still possible.

Overmars on Onana transfer: “If the fee isn’t enough, then he will be free in July”

Whether the two sides will come to an agreement at a later stage seems very much unlikely now. Overmars explained that his club had moved on. In Jay Gorter and Remko Pasveer, the club signed two new goalkeepers last summer.

Inter Milan appear to be favorites to sign Onana on a free transfer next summer. Olympique Lyon were the most interested club last summer, but Onana rejected a move to the Ligue 1 side. Another option is to sell the goalkeeper in January. “You come to a point where the price has to be right,” Overmars said. “If the fee isn’t enough, then he will be free in July.”
