Transfermarkt.es has updated the market values of 150 LaLiga players and downgraded almost all of the league’s €100 million transfers, such as Antoine Griezmann, Eden Hazard, Philippe Coutinho and Gareth Bale – there is also a minus for the two most valuable Germans in Spain, Marc-André ter Stegen and Toni Kroos. The biggest upgrades are received by youngsters Gavi and Yéremy Pino, who should be on the radar of every football fan at least since the Nations League.

There were just five weeks between Gavi’s first appearance for FC Barcelona and his international debut – the midfield all-rounder is under contract with Barça until 2023 and is expected to extend his deal soon.

Tobias Blaseio, Area Manager Transfermarkt Spain, says: “The 17-year-old handled his surprise call-up to Spain’s starting eleven against Italy and France in the Nations League with maturity that immediately earned him international recognition. He is the youngest international in history and part of a new, hopeful generation at Barcelona. Like Ansu Fati once did, Gavi starts his professional career with a lot of praise in advance and a market value of €25 million.”

Villarreal’s Pino, who made his debut for Spain alongside Gavi, is already a year ahead. The 18-year-old was given a starting market value of €2.5 million in October 2020 – followed by becoming a regular for the Europa League winners, a debut for Spain and now a doubling in market value to €30 million.

“The young winger has been able to take his good performances into the new season and he has also shown in the Champions League that he can cause problems for many opponents with his agile and technically strong style of play. His debut for the Spanish national team rounds off his rapid rise,” Blaseio says.

Significant downgrades for record transfers Hazard and Griezmann

Rather continuous than rapid was and is the descent of some of the most expensive players in football history. Real Madrid paid a whopping €115 million to Chelsea for Hazard in 2019 – just 51 matches and five goals later, the Belgian only has a market value of €25 million. The recent minus of €15 million ensures that brother Thorgan Hazard of BVB is ahead of Eden in terms of market value for the first time.

The discrepancy between salary and performances at Los Blancos is even bigger in the case of Bale, who is devalued from €18 million to €10 million and now collects three times his market value in his final year at Real. Both Bale and Hazard are expected to earn around €30 million gross per season. Griezmann pockets a similar salary at Atlético – his old and new club after a last-minute deadline day loan. For the World Cup winner, there is a downgrade from €60 million to €50 million.

“Griezmann has had a poor start after his return to Atlético and currently seems to be able to perform only in the French national team. The future transfer fee of €40 million and the loan fee of €10 million show that these prices are at his new market value level. In order to still be able to talk about a good deal for Atlético at the end of the season, Griezmann will have to show much more. As he approaches 31 and some of the performances have really been very weak, the market value curve tends to point even further down.” In the past three years, it went from €150 million to €50 million for the Frenchman.

Despite upgrade for Vinícius Júnior: €37.5m minus for Real Madrid

A year before FC Barcelona bought Griezmann for €120 million, Real Madrid secured the services of Vinícius Júnior for €45 million on his 18th birthday in the summer of 2018. For the Brazil international, there is a plus of €10 million to now €50 million after a strong start to the season.

Spain expert Blaseio says: “For a very long time, you could sense the great potential in Vinícius Júnior, but he simply performed well too rarely. This season, he was able to surpass his personal goal scoring record in LaLiga after just a few match days – if he can keep these scoring figures stable until the winter break, there will be nothing to prevent a further upgrade. Real Madrid should not be unhappy about the current development either, as the big investment in the future made in 2018 is paying off more and more.”

Overall, the squad value of Los Blancos goes down by €37.5 million. The market value losers include Kroos (-10 to €30 million), Daniel Carvajal (-5 to €25 million) and Dani Ceballos (-7 to €20 million).

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
