Basel with 2nd attempt to sign Karius in the winter – Liverpool contract expires

By

No agreement in the summer

Goalkeeper Heinz Lindner is the number one at FC Basel. But last summer, the Swiss club wanted to sign a competitor for the Austrian goalkeeper and negotiated with Loris Karius, who is currently sitting out his contract at Liverpool, where he has been without a chance since returning from Union Berlin. According to The Athletic, Basel, and Karius, however, could not agree on contract details, and the transfer failed.

Transfermarkt can now confirm a report by Bild that Basel will make a second attempt in the winter. Should Karius be willing to move to the Swiss Super League, the transfer could become a hot number in the winter. The goalkeeper’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2022. The Reds, however, would like to cut his salary sooner rather than later and Karius wants to play.

Since Alisson‘s arrival in 2018, Karius was sent on loan to Besiktas and Union. The former Mainz goalkeeper was the starter at Besiktas until the club failed to pay his salary on time and terminated his contract in May 2020.

Karius to Basel? “I was certainly not treated fairly” at Union Berlin

At Union Berlin, Karius was the number two behind Andreas Luthe. “When I joined I was told that I would play, otherwise I would have never agreed to come, when you look at everything, then I was certainly not treated fairly,” Karius said in an interview with Bild last June. “Especially, when you consider everything that I was told beforehand.”
