The transfer is now officially complete. Major League Soccer side Atlanta United have signed Brazilian winger Luiz Araújo from Ligue 1 side Lille. Araújo joins on a Designated Player contract, the Five Stripes have paid $12 million, the third-highest transfer fee in the club’s history.
“Luiz is a player with great drive, a winning mentality, and is coming to us from a top club in Europe that just won their league,” Atlanta United vice president and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a club statement. “He has experience in big games, as well as UEFA Champions League and Europa League. We’re looking forward to him making an impact with the club.”

The arrival of Araújo ends what was a chaotic last 48 hours for Atlanta ahead of MLS deadline day. The club attempted to sign multiple targets before finally agreeing a deal with Lille to sign Araújo. The 25-year-old winger scored 18 goals and eight assists in 136 games for Lille across all competitions. Lille paid $11.55 million when they signed the winger from São Paulo in 2017.
