Manchester City secured their fifth Premier League title in six seasons after Arsenal’s defeat to Nottingham Forest. They celebrated their title triumph in style with a 3-1 win against Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium. The game was quite significant for both teams, as Manchester City lifted their third consecutive Premier League trophy whereas Chelsea was looking to avoid their lowest-ever Premier League finish.
The Cityzens made a fast start to the game and Raheem Sterling scored the opening goal in the fourth minute. Their advantage was doubled nine minutes later when Gabriel Jesus fired an unstoppable shot past Chelsea‘s goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy. This was Jesus’ first goal in 10 Premier League appearances. City took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Chelsea began the second half with better intensity and had a bright spell immediately after the restart, creating a couple of chances. They finally broke City‘s defence when Billy Gilmour pounced on a loose ball inside the box and finished comfortably into the bottom corner of the net. However, City regained their advantage in the 63rd minute when substitute midfielder Phil Foden scored the third goal for City, after a superb solo run, firing a low shot from the edge of the box into the back of the net.
City was in cruise control for the remainder of the game, denying any opportunity for Chelsea to score. Foden’s goal proved to be the killer blow as Manchester City was too strong for Chelsea and ran out 3-1 winners.
City’s head coach Pep Guardiola was pleased with his team’s performance, saying, “I’m so pleased. Against Chelsea, you never know, but the commitment from everyone was there. We won the Premier League without losing a game away. We will try to win the next game and to finish the season in the right way.”
Overall, Manchester City’s season has been tremendous as they secured their fifth Premier League title in six years and are now on course for an historic Treble, with the FA Cup and Champions League finals coming up. Meanwhile, Chelsea continued to struggle in the Premier League as they face a potential rebuild with Mauricio Pochettino rumored to take over as the new head coach. Their fans would hope for better performances next season, as they are a historically successful club, accustomed to winning trophies.
