Caicedo bid rejected
Arsenal have signed Italy international Jorginho from City rivals Chelsea. According to reports from England, the initial fee for the central midfielder, whose contract was set to expire at the end of the season is €11.3 million plus €2.3m in performance-based add-ons. The Athletic has reported that Jorginho has signed an 18-month contract with the Gunners, with the option of extending it by a further year.
The 31-year-old old Italian national team star makes the move to Arsenal as an experienced Premier League star, after originally arriving in England in 2018 from Napoli for a fee of €57 million and duly established himself as one of the most impressive midfielders in the English top-flight. Over the course of his four and half years in London, Jorginho won the Europa League and Champions League with Chelsea and could now secure a Premier League title with Mikel Arteta’s side this season.
Jorginho undoubtedly fills a hole in Arteta’s midfield, which the club have been desperately trying to fill for much of the January transfer window. The club’s first choice in the transfer market was undoubtedly Brighton star Moisés Caicedo, however the Seagulls were adamant in rejecting any approaches for their midfielder, including a reported €80m offer from Arsenal. As such, the North London club were forced to consider alternative transfer targets and eventually landed on Jorginho.
Trossard, Kiwior and Jorginho – Arsenal spending approaches €200m
Few could doubt Arsenal’s resolve in their efforts to keep their title race on pace, as Arteta & Co. have used the January window to heavily bolster their options for the coming months. Jorginho makes the move to the Emirates as the club’s third major signing of the window, following the signing of Leandro Trossard from Brighton and Speczia defender Jakub Kiwior. When coupled with the club’s summer spending spree, it now means Arsenal have spent no less than €196m on new players this season.
