Third among German centre-backs
West Ham have confirmed the signing of Paris Saint-Germain defender Thilo Kehrer on a four-year deal, with the option of a two-year extension to the contract. In a deal that is worth a reported €12 million, the Germany international heads to London just four years after departing Schalke for €37m.
“I’m very excited to sign for West Ham United,” said Kehrer in an interview with the West Ham website. “This is the best league in the world and I’m excited about coming to play in the Premier League. I talked to the manager and he told me about how he sees me fitting in at the club. My biggest goal now is to get into the team, integrate myself within the group and enjoy playing for West Ham.” West Ham manager David Moyes added: “I am really pleased to welcome Thilo to West Ham United. He’s a talented player, who can play in a number of defensive positions, adding strength and depth to our current options.” The defender will now wear the No.24 shirt with the Hammers.

After his €37m move from Schalke to PSG in 2018, it is the second significant fee paid for Kehrer. With a total of €49m, the 25-year-old overtakes former Chelsea defender Antonio Rüdiger and now ranks third among the German centre-backs with the highest cumulative transfer fees. In comparison, only Mats Hummels and Shkodran Mustafi switched clubs for more money.
After Kehrer transfer: West Ham’s net spend surpasses €100m mark
Kehrer not only represents the latest in a growing list of signings from West Ham, which now stands at six senior players at the cost of around €123m, but is also the second central defender signed by the club this summer. The Germany international follows the arrival of Nayef Aguerd from Stade Rennais earlier in the summer. Following around €18m in sales, West Ham’s summer net spend on transfers now stands at €105m.
Kehrer’s departure from PSG comes as no great surprise, following the defender’s struggles in picking up game time and the club’s desire to sell off a number of back-up players in the summer window. Indeed, the defender represents the seventh sale of the summer for the Parisian giants and will see their income from transfers pass €40m.
