Arrives from Watford

Major League Soccer club Columbus Crew have signed Colombian forward Cucho Hernández from relegated Premier League side Watford for a club-record $10.5 million. First reported by Massive Report last week, the Columbus Dispatch reported on Monday that Hernández has completed his medical and signed a contract until 2025 with the MLS club. The Crew confirmed the deal on Tuesday.

“Cucho is a world-class player who is still at an early stage of his career, and we could not be more excited to welcome him to the Columbus Crew,” Columbus Crew president Tim Bezbatchenko said in a club statement. “Our goal was to sign a forward who would not only be an individual attacking threat, but who would make us more dangerous as a team. Cucho is a versatile attacker whose agility, mobility and unpredictability make him a constant threat for opponents as he has demonstrated while playing against top-level opponents in some of the best leagues in Europe.”

The Hernández deal is significant. The 23-year-old will become the most expensive transfer in Columbus Crew history—breaking a record set by Lucas Zelarayán in 2020—and rank among the ten most expensive transfers in MLS history. The Columbus Dispatch also reported that Hernández will make $3.7 million a season—the same amount as Zelarayan—and will be a Young Designated Player (DP).

Hernandez – One of the ten most expensive departures in Watford history

Hernández originally joined Watford from his youth club Pereira in 2017. After spending several seasons out on loan, the now 23-year-old spent the 2021/22 season with Watford scoring five goals and two assists in 25 Premier League games. Hernández is one of the ten most expensive departures in Watford’s history (overview).
