Ivan Perisic has left Inter Milan after what was the best season in his career and will join Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer. Tottenham announced on Tuesday that the 33-year-old winger had signed a contract until 2024 at the North London-based club.
Perisic joins his former Inter Milan head coach Antonio Conte, who took over Tottenham in November 2021 and has long deemed the Croatian winger as a key signing for the club. For Perisic, it is the first free transfer in his career. Altogether Perisic generated €36.6 million in transfer fees, half of which came when he joined Inter from Wolfsburg for €19 million in the summer of 2015.

Inter wanted to renew with Perisic – Gosens joined in January
Inter, and head coach Simone Inzaghi, in particular, wanted to renew the contract with Perisic—but the Nerazzurri were too slow in making an adequate offer to the 33-year-old. “This is not how you treat important players; you don’t wait until the last moment,” Perisic said two weeks ago after scoring two goals in the cup victory over Juventus. “That is part of the truth, and you need to know that.”
Technically, Perisic is not the sort of target Tottenham boss Daniel Levy wanted to see at his club. Levy wanted younger players with the potential to become successful long-term rather than short-term. Still, as transfer expert Fabrizio Romano pointed out in an article in the Guardian, Conte was given free rein to sign new players. The Italian manager guided Tottenham to Champions League qualification after taking over from Nuno Espírito Santo in November. A capital increase recently generated €177 million for the club—the money is partially earmarked for transfers.

Perisic leaves Inter after seven years at the club. The winger was on loan during Conte’s first season and won the treble with Bayern Munich. The following year he was a key player for Inter, winning the first league title with the club since 2010. This year, Perisic was one of the best players scoring ten goals in 49 games. Inter Milan prepared for a potential departure of their Croatian star by signing Robin Gosens from Atalanta in January.
