Despite surgery
Major League Soccer side Orlando City have announced on Thursday that they have signed Gastón González from the Argentine club Union de Santa Fe. The 20-year-old has signed a three-year contract with club options for 2025, 2026, and 2027. González will join the club for around $2 million and will be part of the U22 Initiative. The Argentine is among the three most expensive transfers in club history (overview).
Immediately after joining the club González was placed on the season-ending injury list. The winger suffered an ACL injury on April 19 in his former club’s match against San Lorenzo and will now undergo surgery. Despite the injury, Orlando City were happy to complete the transaction right away.
“Following Gastón’s unfortunate injury we were able to restructure our deal for him to join the club,” Orlando City general manager Luiz Muzzi said. “For us now, Gastón’s recovery is what is most important and we will give him all the necessary resources to come back healthier and stronger. Although we are saddened by the circumstances delaying his on-field arrival, injuries are a part of the game and we’re very excited about having him here, his future with us and we look forward to him joining the team when fully healthy.”
