Héctor Herrera will join Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo from Atlético Madrid. The MLS club announced on Wednesday that Herrera has signed a pre-contract until 2024 with a club option for 2025. The 31-year-old Mexican will be a Designated Player and join the Dynamo on a free transfer in the summer.
“This is a momentous day for our club, the city and our league to add a player of Hector’s quality and pedigree,” Dynamo general manager Pat Onstad said in a club statement. “He embodies the new ambition that Ted has brought to our club. And while Hector was attracted to our sporting project, he was even more motivated to be a champion for this city. He chose Houston and we couldn’t be happier to have him.”
Herrera joins the Dynamo after having spent the last nine years in Europe. Signed by Porto for $12.1 million from Pachuca in 2013, Herrara joined Atlético on a free transfer in the summer of 2019. The midfielder has played 245 games for Porto (35 goals and 35 assists) and 71 games (one goal and four assists) for Atlético Madrid. This season Herrera has been a part-time player and his market value has dropped from $24.2 million when he first joined Atleti to just $5.5 million, which would still make him the most valuable player on Houston’s current squad (overview).
