Overtakes Gerrard

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah made history on Tuesday, when he became the club’s all-time top goalscorer in European competitions. The Egyptian forward was on hand to score for the Anfield side in the first leg of their Champions League Last 16 clash with Real Madrid. Taking his tally for the season to 19 goals and eight assists in 34 games across all competitions.

The goal now means that Salah has bagged 42 goals across all European competitions for the Premier League giants. A remarkable record considering it has come in just 66 games for Liverpool, but even more so because it means the forward has now surpassed the previously held record by former club captain Steven Gerrard. The previous record stood at 41 goals in 130 games for the former England international, meaning Salah has matched and beaten Gerrard’s record in almost half as many games.

Although Salah is now Liverpool’s all-time top goalscorer in European competition and is likely to keep that title for some time to come, the Egyptian international is still some way off his club’s record across all competitions. And it seems unlikely that Salah will ever be able to lay claim to that record too. To date, Salah has bagged an impressive 175 goals in 288 games for Liverpool. That return has seen the forward rise to fifth in the club’s all-time top goalscorer charts, surpassing club legends like John Barnes, Michael Owen and Sir Kenny Dalglish. However, the forward is still some way off top spot.

Ahead of Salah in the chart are Robbie Fowler (183 goals), Steven Gerrard (186 goals), Roger Hunt (216 goals) and Ian Rush, who sits top by a considerable distance with a truly remarkable 336 goals in 648 games for Liverpool. And while Salah’s 0.61 goals per game may beat Rush’s 0.52 goals per game for the Anfield side, he’s unlikely to ever reach such heights.
