Manchester City are currently preparing to face Liverpool for the first time in the Premier League this season.

Following Tuesday night’s 3-3 draw against Feyenoord in the Champions League at the Etihad Stadium -which Alan Shearer called an “absolute disaster” – the Manchester club will be back in Premier League action this weekend.

Unfortunately for City, who are now without a win in their six previous matches across all competitions, Anfield has not been a particularly easy place for them to get points from historically.

Specifically, the Blues have only won twice at Liverpool’s home ground in the Premier League era.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s big top-of-the-table clash in Merseyside, a key figure from City’s squad has shared some observations about the Citizens’ upcoming opponents.

Kyle Walker makes Liverpool point ahead of Man City clash

When asked in a recent edition of You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker about City’s upcoming match against Liverpool, the right-back gave this assessment.

He said: “I just feel that Liverpool are flying at the minute, and they’ve got a new lease of life under the new manager.

“They’re playing some great football, and it’s going to be one of them games that you look forward to. I think every year we always look forward to playing against Liverpool, but especially this year, we’ve got a point to prove against them.

“If you win against Liverpool at any point in the season. It’s always a statement win because they’re always going to be right up there.

“But I think especially this year, where they’ve set off like a house on fire, they’re playing some great football under the new manager.

“He’s brought a little bit of the spark back. I don’t think Klopp ever lost the spark, but I think playing for a new manager [helps].”

Liverpool will be full of confidence to take on City

As Walker mentioned, Liverpool had a change of management over the summer, as Arne Slot took the reins from Jurgen Klopp after the German brought an end to his nine years with the Reds.

Liverpool 2024/25 Matches Won Drawn Lost Goals Scored Goals Conceded
Premier League 12 10 1 1 24 8
Champions League 5 5 0 0 12 1
Carabao Cup 2 2 0 0 8 3

Since then, Liverpool have had a very strong first few months of the season, winning all but two of the 19 matches they’ve played in across all competitions, keeping 10 clean sheets in the process.

With that in mind, added onto the poor run of form City have been on over the past few weeks, it’d be safe to assume that Liverpool will be heading into Sunday’s game full of confidence, especially after beating Real Madrid 2-0 on Wednesday night in the Champions League.

Therefore, regardless of Walker’s point about the Reds having a fresh spark due to Slot’s arrival, Pep Guardiola’s side will be facing their toughest test of the season on Sunday.
