The defeat for the lacklustre champions means they have dropped to fourth in the league, six points behind leaders Arsenal.
Credit must be given to Unai Emery’s side, who have won their last 14 consecutive home matches, making it their best since 1930-31.
Though Villa’s rise and success was predicted by Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson at the start of the campaign.
Emery’s troops got off to the worst possible start, losing 5-1 away to Newcastle on the opening day.
Despite this, Ferguson was impressed with what he saw from Villa, and he looks to have been right after all.
When asked who impressed him the most on the opening day of the season, the Scot surprised most.
“To be honest with you, I watched Aston Villa and Newcastle, and I can’t believe the scoreline,” he said.
“Honestly, Aston Villa played fantastic football, and just lost bad goals. It’s a surprising game, football. You can play teams off the pitch and not score – that’s what Aston Villa did.”
Villa leapfrogged Man City to go third in the league following 1-0 victoryAFP
Leon Bailey’s second-half deflected strike was enough to earn all three points for his side.
Man City have failed to secure victory in their last four Premier League matches, taking three points from a possible 12.
“The better team won,” City boss Pep Guardiola said post-match.
“I said to the players: ‘In football, this happens. I know you wanted to win, I know you tried, because you have proved to me and everyone many, many times.
“Now the results are not so good when they always were [previously]. I have to think about it. I have to sleep, to reflect, I have to see the games, how the players [did] with this one and try to do it.
“It was really difficult because they are really physical and able to control many aspects. That is the reason why they are up there, playing good football and we could not do it.
“It’s my duty, my job to find a way to come back from the situation because over many years together we were able to find a way to play games – sometimes playing good, sometimes not but always we found a way to do it – and now we are struggling. We have to change the dynamic.”
