Manchester City are expected to be ‘expelled’ from the Premier League as part of their punishment for breaking Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, according to financial expert The Swedish Rumble.

The English champions were charged with over 100 breaches of the financial regulations that spread over a nine-year period, which started in 2009 and goes on until 2018. In that time, City won three Premier League titles.

Alongside a list of financial charges, the Premier League also allege Man City of failing to comply with UEFA’s FFP rules over a five-year period.

Following the league’s decision to dock 10 points from Everton after failing to follow the profit and sustainability rules, questions have begun to surface about the punishment Pep Guardiola’s team may face. In a thread posted on social media, he wrote: “With the Everton decision at hand, it is now possible to – with far greater certainty than before – predict the outcome of Manchester City‘s case. In my view, it must now be expected that MCFC will get EXPELLED from the Premier League!!”

The thread, finishes with precise details about Man City‘s potential drop to the bottom of the English pyramid. The Swedish Rumble replied to a football fan demanding City be relegated to the ‘lowest division’, saying: “To be technical, the PL is separate from the EFL.

“There is an agreement on promotion and demotion between the PL/Championship, but all the PL can decide on is to relegate MCFC, anything more than that would be up to the EFL.”

The outcome of City‘s investigation has been tipped to take more years, proving the seriousness around the claims. However, football finance expert, Stefan Borson, has warned they could be faced with their consequences as early as next year.

“There are too many things that ‘might’ happen if City are found against. It will be very serious – all hell will break loose,” he said. “It will turn into an enormous story – not just in respect of football but much wider than that. So many parties will be implicated.

“It will be an incredibly explosive situation.” Borson added: “From a football perspective, it’s impossible to think City would not be relegated if all of these things were found against them.”

“The hearing is likely to be in 2024 at some point,” he continued. “The Premier League are bound to be concerned about what they would do if City are found guilty. The fact that the League charged City with such serious matters shows you this is a very bold move.”
