“Set to Sign New Deal: Has Xavi’s Return Turned Around Barcelona’s Fortunes?”

By

Barcelona is reportedly working on a new deal with manager Xavi in an attempt to extend his current contract, which is set to expire in 2024. Xavi has managed 94 games at Barcelona to date, with a record of 59 wins, 16 draws, and 19 losses. His average points per game ratio of 2.05 is higher than his predecessor Ronald Koeman’s, but falls short of Quique Setién, Ernesto Valverde, and Luis Enrique. However, Xavi’s record can be justified by his ability to beat his competitors, as Barcelona has won more league points since Xavi took over than their main rival Real Madrid under Carlo Ancelotti. Xavi has also achieved this success with a lower net spend in the transfer window compared to Madrid. However, there is still room for improvement for Xavi as Barcelona manager. The team’s performances in knockout competitions, such as the Spanish Cup and the Champions League, have been subpar. Barcelona was knocked out in the Round of 16 in the Spanish Cup and failed to advance past the group stages in the Champions League in Xavi’s first season. Last season, they were eliminated in the first knockout round of the Europa League. Xavi will need to perform better in European competitions in order to define his term as manager of the club. Overall, while Xavi has brought some consistency to Barcelona and achieved success in domestic competitions, there is still work to be done to reach the club’s previous level of European success.
