Biggest gains in 12 months
A lot can change over the course of 12 months. Managers can go from hero to zero and find themselves quickly out of a job, league or European champions can be relegated to yesterday’s team and, perhaps most notably, the form and fortunes of star players can rise and fall in dramatic fashion. And that’s undoubtedly the case when it comes to the market values of some of the Premier League’s biggest stars.
Since January 2022, Manchester City have won another Premier League title, Manchester United have hired their second head coach and the combined wealth of the top-flight clubs have spent no less than €2.4 billion on signing new players – which doesn’t even include sign-on fees and ever-increasing wages. So which Premier League players have enjoyed the best 2022 and seen their market value increase the most over the course of the past 12 months?

Antony, Gapko and Núñez – new arrivals claim top spots
Naturally, the Premier League’s wealth and tendency to import the very best players from around Europe means that the biggest gains in market value have come from players joining the league for substantial transfer fees. This is undoubtedly most evident in the case of winger Antony, who made the move to Manchester United in the summer of 2022 for a remarkable €95m. In the process, the 22-year-old talent’s market value now stands at €75m, which is a €50m increase on what it was in January 2022.

This is also evident throughout the league, where other clubs have also spent big on new players. In fact, no less than five of the top 10 players to have seen the biggest market value increases since 2022 can largely thank big transfers in the previous 12 months for their bumps in value. For example, Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo increased by €38m each after their moves to Liverpool, as well as a €35m increase for new Anfield star Luis Díaz. Similarly, Marc Cucurella saw a €35m increase in his market value to €55m after his move to Chelsea.
Saka, Caicedo and Mac Allister – earning their new values on the pitch
Of course, big transfer fees aren’t the only way that players see their market value increase on Transfermarkt. And a far more consistent way to see a player improve their standing is by doing things the old fashioned way: impressing on the pitch. And there were certainly plenty of Premier League stars that dazzled in 2022.
The most impressive of the lot was none other than Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka, who saw his market value jump by 53.8% to €100m, allowing him to join a rather exclusive club of players that are worth a nine-figure fee. However, he wasn’t the only star from Mikel Arteta’s squad to enjoy the past 12 months, as Gabriel Martinelli and William Saliba both saw their market value increase by €32m and €26m respectively.

However, Arsenal weren’t the only impressive side in the Premier League in 2022. Perhaps most notably are Brighton, who have no less than two players in the top 10 in the form of Moisés Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister, who saw their values rise by €33m and €32m respectively. Of course, the Seagulls could also lay claim to Cucurella’s development up until his summer move to Chelsea.
