Stood out in MLS Next Pro

Like father, like Son? Romeo Beckham is headed to England. On Friday, it was announced that Premier League side Brentford had loaned the 20-year-old Son of English icon David Beckham from Inter Miami CF. Romeo will initially join Brentford B on loan from Inter Miami CF II, where he scored two goals and ten assists in 20 MLS Next Pro games last season until the summer. I am very proud and very happy to be here,” Beckham said in an interview with Brentford’s club media.

Beckham has been training with the club since the end of the MLS Next Pro season last fall and has impressed. “We’ve been absolutely delighted with Romeo since he arrived with us,” said Brentford B head coach Neil MacFarlane said in a club statement. “He came to us from Inter Miami with the aim of working with us during their close season. Romeo has applied himself unbelievably well; he’s really bought into the culture and the group, which he has become a big part of.”

From 2014 to 2015, Romeo Beckham was a part of the Arsenal academy before heading to the United States to join his father’s project in Southern Florida. Whether he can emulate his father’s success remains to be seen. David Beckham managed 115 appearances for England, won six English championships, the Club World Cup, and the Champions League. Beckham senior played for various top clubs, including Manchester United, Real Madrid, Milan, PSG, and LA Galaxy.

Romeo Beckham to Brentford – More than a conditioning stint?

Nonetheless, Beckham’s loan transfer to Brentford is an exciting step in the career of the 20-year-old. Able to play both on the wing and as a no.10, Romeo Beckham has been outstanding at times in the newly created MLS Next Pro. Although it is still hard to judge the level of the competition, the newly created MLS farm league is already producing some outstanding talent. Furthermore, Brentford is considered one of the better run clubs in England in terms of talent acquisition and they might have just spotted something in the younger Beckham that could provide the club with potentially huge upside at minimal risk further down the road.
