Complete update in Greece
Transfermarkt has completely updated the market values in the Greek Super League, causing several changes among the league’s most valuable players. While Olympiacos’ summer signings James Rodríguez and Diadié Samassékou previously shared first place, the Hoffenheim loanee now stands alone at the top of the rankings. Although both are downgraded, Samassékou loses only €1 million to now €12m, while James drops from €13m to €9m. The former Real Madrid and Everton star’s lowest value since 2011.

Things are also going downhill for the third most valuable footballer in Greece, Georgios Masouras. With a minus of €2.5m to €7.5m, the left winger records the second largest devaluation in the league behind James and ex-Toffees defender Djibril Sidibé (-€4m to €4m). Overall, record champions Olympiacos suffer the biggest drop in squad value in the league. After a minus of €22.7m, the Greek club of Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis are now valued at €116.2m instead of €139.1m, but remain at the top of the ranking by a wide margin. AEK Athens in second place have an overall value of €51.6m (-€3m).
Olympiacos dominate top 10 – The most valuable players in the Super League
The decline in squad values at many clubs can be explained by the fact that the Super League has only collected 2,125 points in the UEFA five-year rankings in 2022/23 – the last time a worse figure was recorded was in 1990/91. For years now, the Greek top tier has been performing below expectations. As a result, the market values continue to drop as well.
Panathinaikos on the up – PAOK youngster Koulierakis biggest winner
One of the few exceptions to this trend are league leaders Panathinaikos, who had started the season with ten wins from ten games before Sunday night’s 1-1 draw against Olympiacos, making it the best start in the club’s history. As a result, three players were rewarded with a plus of €0.5m: Aitor Cantalapiedra, Andraz Sporar and Sebastián Palacios.
Cantalapiedra, now valued at €2.5m, still leads the scoring charts with eight goals, but suffered a torn ACL. Otherwise, the upgrade would have been even higher. Centre-forward Sporar (€5m) was signed for €3.5m from Sporting in the summer, making him the club’s most expensive transfer in 13 years. The investment has paid off so far, as the Slovenian has already contributed five goals and two assists in the league. Palacios (€3.5m), meanwhile, has been part of the team since 2021 and remains one of the top performers.
PAOK’s Konstantinos Koulierakis is the biggest winner league-wide, increasing his value by €1.2m to €1.5m. Last season, the 18-year-old centre-back still played for the reserve team in the second division. In the summer, there was reportedly an inquiry from Borussia Dortmund, who wanted to sign him for their reserve side, and other clubs apparently already showed interest as well. As a result, sporting director José Boto raised his price tag to €15m. Koulierakis’ contract with PAOK still runs until the end of 2025.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
