Jupiler Pro League market values: Record for Club Brugge – Anderlecht downgraded

By

Complete update in Belgium

Club Brugge were one of the biggest surprises in the Champions League group stage this season; the club qualified for the round of 16 after just four games played. The success in Europe also reflects well in the Jupiler Pro League market value update in which the squad value has been increased to €184.2 million—the highest number for any team in Belgium since the introduction of market values in the country in 2004.

Jupiler Pro League: All new market values at a glance

The protagonists of the success have been rewarded with market value updates. Among them are Ferran Jutglà, who joined the club from Barcelona last summer and could be a candidate for Spain’s World Cup squad. Raphael Onyedika is another summer signing who has impressed. Jutglà sees his market value increase from €7 million to €14m, and Onyedika is up by €5m to €13m.

Abakar Sylla is the biggest winner of the update. The 19-year-old was an unknown quantity in Belgium before the season but has played an incredible campaign and is now considered one of the top talents in the country. He saw his market value increase from €1.5m to €9m. At the top of the market value ranking is another player from the current champions. Andreas Skov Olsen saw his market value increase by €5m to €20m and is now clear at the top of the ranking.

The reason for the gap at the top is also due to the fact that not all his teammates have seen their market value go up. Among the players downgraded is Noa Lang. Lang was one of the best players last season but has struggled for playing time and is far removed from his top form. As a result, he has dropped from €19m to now €15m. “Another player who has struggled is record signing Roman Yaremchuk,” Bart Tamsyn, Transfermarkt‘s area manager in Belgium, said about another downgrade at Brugge. “The fee in the summer was just above his market value, which considering the way he has been playing, is just no longer justified. Yaremchuk has only played a part-time role.” Consequentially, the 26-year-old has been downgraded from €15m to €12m.

Market values Belgium: Future Leipzig keeper Vandevoort upgraded

While Brugge has impressed in the Champions League, KRC Genk have been impressive in the domestic league and are now seven points clear at the top of the table. As a result, there are several players with a market value upgrade in the squad, including future RB Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoort (+€3m to €9m) and 23-year-old Mike Trésor. The forward has scored five goals and 12 assists; his market value has been increased by €4.5m to €8m.

Former league leaders Royal Antwerp have struggled in recent weeks. Even though in 28-year-old Vincent Janssen (+€1.5m to €6m), 22-year-old Alhassan Yusuf (+€1.5m to €6m), and 27-year-old goalkeeper Jean Butez (+€1m to €6m) there are a few players that saw their market value increase. Nice loanee Calvin Stengs (-€2m to €11m) is among the players downgraded.

RSC Anderlecht the biggest loser of the update

A clear loser of the update are RSC Anderlecht. Several top players playing for the record champions. Anderlecht are currently 10th, and downgrades are, therefore, consequential. Whether it is Yari Verschaeren (-€3m to €10m), Francis Amuzu (-€1m to €6.5m), Hendrik Van Crombrugge (-€1.5m to €4m) or Wesley Hoedt (-€1.5m to €3.5m)—altogether 20 Anderlecht players have seen their market values downgraded, which has led to a deficit of €7.4m overall in squad value.

“The only reason the drop hasn’t been more is that they have several talents, who despite the crisis, were able to show their potential and could be interesting for clubs from bigger leagues,” Tamsyn said. Center-back Zeno Debast could even be part of Belgium’s World Cup squad and, as a result, doubled his market value to now €8m. Sixteen-year-old Julien Duranville is one of the biggest talents to emerge from Anderlecht’s academy, and after some promising games increased his market value by €1m to now €5m.

Other talents that have been interesting to watch are Cihan Canak (+€3.5m to €4m) from Standard Liège, Genk’s Bilal El Khannouss (+€1m to €4.5m), and Simon Adingra (+€2m to €6m), who is on loan from Brighton at Saint Gilloise.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
