Premier League news: Erling Haaland named most valuable player in the world

By

After the Premier League update

Manchester City forward Erling Haaland has knocked Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappé off top spot to become the world’s most valuable player, following the Transfermarkt Premier League market value update. Making him the first player in the English top flight to lay claim to the title since Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United in 2009, when he was joint top with Lionel Messi.

The Premier League market value update

Haaland arrived at Man City this summer, following a move from Borussia Dortmund for €60 million. However, the player’s real market value was far higher than the release-clause that came into play and as such the Norway international began the season with a market value of €150m. That number has now increased dramatically after an impressive start to life at his new club.

Erling Haaland's rise to world's most valuable player

Indeed, the young talent blew right past any expectations placed upon him and has not only matched the remarkable goalscoring form he enjoyed in the Bundesliga (62 goals in 67 games) but has so far exceeded it, with no less than 17 goals in 11 league games for Pep Guardiola’s side. Haaland isn’t just keeping up with the pace of the Premier League but is unquestionably thriving in it.

As such, Transfermarkt has now increased the player’s market value by €20m to €170m, which now places him about Mbappé (€160m) as the most valuable player on the planet. “Should Haaland stay clear of injuries and be able to maintain his form at least to some extent, he will go even higher in the future,” Daniel Busch, Area Manager Transfermarkt UK, said. “A rumoured €200 million exit clause, which reportedly can be triggered by foreign clubs in the summer of 2024, already seems too low from Man City’s point of view.”

Mbappé v Haaland – can the French striker reclaim his crown?

Many believe that Haaland and Mbappé are set to take on the mantle of battling it out for the title of this new generation’s best player. And considering the form both players are currently enjoying, it’s certainly an enticing prospect. However, the market values of each player could vary wildly in the coming years and seasons ahead.

For example, Haaland is perhaps best placed to continue seeing his market value rise at a steady pace if he can continue to perform with this remarkable form in the Premier League, which is undoubtedly considered to be the best league in the world. In contrast, Mbappé’s goals and assists in Ligue 1 simply don’t stack up as well. However, it remains to be seen which club can win the Champions League first, which will also play a huge part in the future market values of either star.

Most valuable player in the world each year

Where Mbappé may be able to regain ground and move back on top is in the field of international football. While Haaland’s Norway side will not be at the 2022 World Cup, his French rival will be there with Les Bleus and will likely have every intention of retaining the nation’s title as world champions. Should France win the World Cup and Mbappé play another leading role, he’ll possibly find himself leapfrogging Haaland and back on top as the world’s most valuable player.
