Complete update
The market values for the biggest stars in the Portugal Primeira Liga have now been updated in a new Transfermarkt market value update. As one of Europe’s biggest top-flights, as well as being arguably the continent’s most impressive division for developing young players, this new update brings with it some exciting news about young players that top clubs around the world are keeping close tabs on.
We begin with the most valuable players in the division. In the last few months, Otávio and Pedro Gonçalves – who were both valued at €30 million – were the most valuable players in the Primeira Liga, but that has all changed with this new market value update. Although neither player has lost value, Enzo Fernández and Diogo Costa have now surpassed them as the most valuable players in the league, after their own values rose to €35m.
The most valuable players in the 2022/23 Portugal Primeira Liga
At just 21 years of age, Fernández has seen his market value rise consistently in recent months, including when he was still playing in his native country for River Plate. However, this most recent jump from €20m to €35m was not only the most dramatic increase in his career to date, but also the largest increase for any player in the Portuguese top-flight in this market value update. Which only goes to show how important he has been to Roger Schmidt’s Benfica side.
Similarly, Porto goalkeeper Costa is one of the few players in the division that has improved the most in the opening months of the new season, with his market value rising €10m compared to where it was prior to the new campaign. The performances of the shot-stopper in domestic and European competition has won him plenty of applause and as such his new value is reflective of his clear ability.
Perhaps the most interesting update for Premier League fans came in the form of Sporting forward Marcus Edwards continuing to go from strength to strength in Portugal. The 23-year-old talent has enjoyed an impressive start to the season in the Portuguese top-flight and the Champions League and as such his market value has risen to €25m. This now makes the former Tottenham Hotspur youth product the fifth most valuable player in the Primeira Liga.
However, we can’t talk about the improvement of the league’s most promising stars without mentioning Benfica star António Silva. The 19-year-old central defender has nailed down a starting position at the Portuguese giants and is already one of the club’s most exciting talents. As such, his market value has risen from €4m to €15m in this update.
The Portugal Primeira Liga: Biggest increases in market value
Draxler, Paulinho and Coates all struggle – market values drop as a result
Of course, it isn’t all good news when it comes to a market value update, and as such, some players also saw their values drop in this update. Some notable examples of players that have had poor starts to the season and have lost value this time around include Paulinho, Ricardo Esgaio, Jeremiah St. Juste, João Mário and Julian Draxler, who have all performed below expectation.
However, poor performances aren’t the only important factor in decreasing market values. For example, Sebastián Coates (32 years old) and Mateus Uribe (31 years old) have also seen their values drop mainly due to their age and the diminishing prospect of either player being sold in the future for higher values. Daniel Bragança also saw his market value decrease, as he remains injured and unable to compete.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
