“Incredible weapon”
Matchday 13 in the Premier League is in the books, and Erling Haaland has already scored more goals this season as Manchester City’s top goalscorer of last season. With his two goals in Man City’s 3-1 victory over Brighton, the 22-year-old has now scored 17 goals, besting Kevin de Bruyne’s 15 goals from the 2021/22 season. The season before, Man City’s top goalscorer was Ilkay Gündogan, with just 13 goals in the Premier League.
“Erling scoring the two goals, it’s important for him and the team and for us, and it’s another weapon we have now,” Man City manager Pep Guardiola said when asked about Haaland’s qualities after the Norwegian first joined the club. “We need players in the box, and with Erling [Haaland] and Julián [Álvarez] we have that weapon. For the people outside, that is important. The space in the middle is so minimal, we try to make the movements there,” Guardiola added this month.

Signed for €60m from Borussia Dortmund, Haaland has scored 47.2% of Man City’s league goals this season—no other player has scored a higher percentage of his club’s goals than the Norwegian. With a market value of €150m, Haaland is the second most valuable player on the planet and is currently eight goals ahead of Harry Kane in the Premier League Golden Boot race.
Will Haaland break the goalscoring record in the Premier League?
On his current pace, Haaland will easily crack the record set by Mohamed Salah. The Liverpool forward scored 32 goals in 38 games in 2017/18, breaking a record previously held by Alan Shearer (1995/96), Cristiano Ronaldo (2007/08), and Luis Suárez (2013/14)—all three have managed 31 goals. In the last four years, 22 or 23 goals were enough to become the best striker in the Premier League.
