Spanish midfielder Gavi of FC Barcelona has won the 2022 Golden Boy award. This was announced by the Italian newspaper Tuttosport, which has been awarding the prize since 2003, on Friday. The 18-year-old midfielder is the third Barça player to win the voting, after Lionel Messi in 2005 and Pedri last year. In Cesc Fàbregas (2006) and Isco (2012), two further Spaniards have previously received the trophy.

All Golden Boy winners since 2003

All talents born after January 1, 2002, were eligible this year. The list, initially published with 100 names in mid-June, was reduced by 20 players on the 15th of each month, with a last cut in October leaving just 20 talents for the final vote. The winner was selected by various publications from Europe, including The Times from England, Bild from Germany, L’Équipe from France and Marca from Spain.

Gavi prevailed over fellow young stars Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund), Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich) and Eduardo Camavinga (Real Madrid) to win the prestigious award. The player from Barça’s La Masia academy already won the Kopa trophy as the best U-21 player of the year during Monday’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in France.
