Sporting head coach Rúben Amorim has emerged as a candidate to succeed Steven Gerrard as the next Aston Villa managaer, according to reports in England. The former Rangers head coach was relieved of his duties on Thursday evening, following a 3-0 defeat to Fulham which saw the Birmingham club slump to 17th in the Premier League table, following just two wins from their opening 11 league games.

“We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future,” a short club statement read on Villa’s homepage. The follow day, the Villa Park side confirmed that Gerrard’s coaching staff, including assistant manager Gary McAllister had also left the club following Gerrard’s sacking. And it seems as though the club have already moved on to a new potential managerial appointment.

According to the Athletic, both Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel are not interested in taking over from Gerrard at Villa and so the club have turned to more obtainable targets, such as Brentford head coach Thomas Frank and Sporting head coach Amorim, who has gained a number of admirers following his success in leading the Portuguese club to their first league title in 19 years in 2021.

However, it remains to be seen just how appealing the Villa job is to in-demand managers like Amorim and Frank. Gerrard spent €70 million on new players in the off-season but was unable to replicate the success he had with Rangers, with whom he won the Scottish Premiership title in 2021. Whether money would be available to a new head coach remains to be seen, but there’s no certainty that this Villa squad will improve under another manager.
