Real Madrid transfer news: Guardiola denies release clause in Haaland’s contract

Pep denies Madrid clause

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has denied the existence of any release clauses in Erling Haaland’s contract with the club. The Norwegian striker signed a five-year deal with the Premier League giants this summer, following a transfer from Borussia Dortmund worth an estimated €60 million. However, speculation surrounds the striker’s intentions of fulfilling that entire contract.

As was the case at his previous club, where Haaland was allowed to leave this year for a set price, reports have suggested that the striker made the move to Man City with the intention of leaving at some point for a set fee. Reports in Spain have already suggested that Real Madrid is the player’s intended destination in a few years time, with a clause inserted in Haaland’s deal that would allow him to leave for €200 million in 2024, even if the English giants would prefer to retain his services.

However, when asked about such a clause on Wednesday night, Guardiola flat-out denied that it existed in any form. “It’s not true,” Guardiola said. “He has not got a release clause for Real Madrid, or any other team.” The Man City manager added: “Am I annoyed by the rumours? No, absolutely not. Rumours, and people talking, you cannot control it – so always we have to worry about what we can control. The important thing is that he has adapted [since joining City] really well. I have the feeling he is incredibly happy here, and this is the most important thing.”

Indeed, Haaland has wasted no time at all in settling into his new club, bagging an incredible 19 goals and three assists in just 12 games in all competitions. Most notably, the former Bundesliga talisman has picked up 14 goals in just eight Premier League games, most recently bagging a brace against Manchester United in his side’s 6-3 win. In fact, the player has been so impressive that the club may already be considering a new deal for Haaland.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Man City are already working on a new deal for the towering striker that would void the aforementioned release clause in 2024. However, given that the striker already earns a reported €428,000 per week at the club, a new contract would likely force City to make Haaland their highest earner at the club. But a quick look at the player’s goalscoring record may suggest that he’s certainly worth that.
