Man Utd and Liverpool once interested
Barcelona are reportedly set to fight off competition from Premier League rivals and tie midfield star Gavi down to a new contract. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Spanish giants are on the verge of confirming a new deal for the Spain international that will run until 2026 and have a sizable release clause that will stand at €1 billion. The 18-year-old central midfielder has a current market value of €60 million.
Speculation has surrounded Gavi’s future at the club due to his current contract at Barca set to expire at the end of this season. Had the player opted to run down his deal and move clubs next summer, he would have not only become the club’s third most valuable departure ever but undoubtedly the most significant free transfer since Lionel Messi left in the summer of 2021 to join Paris Saint-Germain. That unfortunate fate for the Catalan club now seems to have been avoided.
Ronaldo, Gavi & Co. – The most valuable players with contracts expiring in 2023
The past 12 months have seen Gavi go from strength to strength with Barca and the Spanish national team and as such the young player has been linked with a move to some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Since November of last year, the midfielder has been tipped to join Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool on numerous occasions. However, it seems as though the La Masia graduate has opted to stay put for the time being.
