Brentford have signed Sampdoria midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard after agreeing a deal with the Italian side to buy the player for a reported €15 million. The 22-year-old talent had completed his medical with the Premier League side eralier this week before signing a five-year deal with the Bees on Thursday.

The midfielder, who has a market value of €15m, becomes the Premier League club’s sixth signing of the summer and takes Brentford’s spending to date up to no less than €50m. The reported fee would also make Damsgaard the club’s fourth most expensive signing ever, coming short of Kristoffer Ajer’s move from Celtic in 2021 for €15.7m and the arrival of Aaron Hickey and Keane Lewis-Potter this summer.
The reported fee suggests that Sampdoria will make a tidy profit on a player they signed just two years ago for €6.75m. In that time Damsgaard has gone from strength to strength in Serie A, making over 46 league appearances for the club since joining from Nordsjaelland, not to mention a stand-out campaign for the Denmark international team at Euro 2020.
Damsgaard is just the latest in a busy summer of signings from Brentford, as Thomas Frank and his side look to improve upon a 13th-place finish in the English top flight last season. The club, known for their smart business in the transfer window, will be hoping to push into the top half of the table and put some serious distance between themselves and the threat of relegation. Frank said: “Mikkel is, in my opinion, another classic Brentford signing. He is a young player with big potential to develop further. We know we can help Mikkel reach his highest level, we have the staff here that have experience in doing that and we are looking forward to working with him.
