Castellanos set to leave New York City FC for Girona – Loan deal to fellow City Group team

Major League Soccer is set to lose one of its biggest attractions. On Monday, multiple sources, including Fabrizio Romano and MLSSoccer.com writer Tom Bogert reported that the Argentine striker was set to leave New York City FC on loan to join fellow City Group and newly promoted LaLiga side Girona. According to Romano, the City Group has now started to reject any other offers for the striker with a market value of $13.2 million.

Castellanos has been sensational over the last two years. Last year he won the Golden Boot in MLS with 19 goals and eight assists in 32 games and was voted the player of the season by the Transfermarkt community. This season he once again leads the league with 13 goals in 16 games, including the winner against city rivals New York Red Bulls last weekend (1-0). That derby against RBNY might have been Castellanos’ last match for the Citizens.

The rise of the 23-year-old striker has been unprecedented. The forward was once signed for just $468,000 from Uruguayan club CA Torque in 2019. Over the last three years, the striker has increased his market value from $440,000 to $13.2 million, making him the fourth most valuable player in MLS. But NYCFC’s financial demands have also made a transfer to Europe difficult, and the City Group now wants to increase his profile in the more competitive LaLiga.
