Niakhaté joins Nottingham Forest from Mainz – Among 5 most expensive departures

Moussa Niakhaté has left Mainz and officially joined promoted Premier League side Nottingham Forest. The center-back has signed a three-year contract with an option for one additional season. Nottingham Forest announced the transfer on Wednesday after Niakhaté passed his medical.

Neither Mainz nor Nottingham disclosed the transfer fee, but Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that the fee will be in the region of €10 million. Mainz could earn an additional €5 million should certain performance-based add-ons be met. As a result, the Frenchman becomes one of the five most expensive outgoing transfers in Mainz’s history. The Bundesliga side has already earned €24 million from transfers this summer—the club’s expenditure this summer stands at €9.3 million. Niakhaté becomes Forest’s second Bundesliga arrival after the club already signed Taiwo Awoniyi from Union Berlin (overview).

Niakhaté originally joined Mainz from Metz for €6 million in the summer of 2018 and has since increased his market value from €5 million to €18 million. The defender played 30 of 34 possible Bundesliga games (four goals) and played the full 90 minutes in all but two of those games. Mainz coach Bo Svensson described Niakhaté as an absolute leader.
