After 84 games in charge
Wayne Rooney is no longer the manager of Derby County. Freshly relegated from the Championship, the club made the announcement on Friday. The 36-year-old former star striker has asked for a mutual termination of his contract. Rooney joined the club as a player in 2020 and first became an interim manager and then took over the role full-time. Rooney was in charge for 84 games in which he averaged 1.14 points per match.
“Personally, I feel the club now needs to be led by someone with fresh energy and not affected by the events that have happened over the last eighteen months,” Rooney said in a club statement. “I will remember my time at Derby with great pride and affection and would like to thank all my staff, players and of course the fans for their incredible support. I will never forget you and hope to see you all again in the near future and in happier times.”
Derby County have struggled with financial problems for quite some time. The 1972 and 1975 English champions were deducted 21 points for failing the financial fair play rules imposed by the Championship and for declaring insolvency. As a result, the club was relegated to the third division at the end of the season. All takeover attempts have also failed.“All parties recognize the need to conclude a sale of the business and assets of the club, as a matter of urgency, and the joint administrators, wish to reconfirm that Wayne’s departure will not affect those ongoing, positive discussions,” a statement issued by the club read.
