Following Premier League interest
Rb Leipzig have confirmed that forward Christopher Nkunku has signed a new two-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2026. The France international has gone from strength to strength in the Bundesliga since signing from Paris Saint-Germain for €13 million in 2019 and has seen his market value rise accordingly. The 24-year-old forward is now worth an impressive €80m.
“I’m pleased to continue wearing the RB Leipzig shirt,” said Nkunku in a statement on the club website. “After our great achievement in winning the DFB-Pokal, it remained clear that my story here isn’t over yet – we want more! I was really impressed with the club’s efforts to keep me, so a big thanks goes to those responsible for the trust in me and especially to Oliver Mintzlaff, with whom I was always in close contact. RB Leipzig have made a name for themselves on the international stage in recent years and have shown time and again that we can compete for titles. We want to build on that going forward and go one step further.”

Over the course of the past three years, Nkunku has amassed an incredible record of 31 goals and 36 assists in 93 games for the German side. As a result, the player has been linked with moves to some of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Real Madrid all linked with a move for the player at one point or another over the course of the last 18 months. However, while Nkunku’s new contract may rule out a move this summer, it could also open up a potential departure in 2023.
No deal in 2022 but new contract could provide exit plans for 2023
Although Nkunku is now technically committed to staying at Leipzig until 2026, reports from Germany and elsewhere suggest that this new deal actually offers the player an opportunity to leave the club next summer. According to sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, the new deal includes a release clause that will be valid starting from the summer of 2023. Indeed, according to German sports magazine Kicker, the release clause will stand at around €60m, which should make the player extremely enticing to some of Europe’s biggest clubs. And would match RB Leipzig’s most expensive transfer to date, which was Naby Keita’s €60m move to Liverpool four years ago.
