Lewandowski replacement?

Liverpool have confirmed that Sadio Mané will leave the club and join Bayern Munich after the forward agreed a three-year deal with the Bundesliga side. In a transfer that will reportedly cost an up-front fee of €32 million with €9m in add-ons, the Senegal international becomes the second most valuable player to ever leave the Anfield side, with a market value of €70m.

“I’m really happy to finally be at Bayern in Munich,” said Mané in an interview on the club’s website. “We spoke a lot and I felt big interest from this great club right from the beginning, so for me there were no doubts. It’s the right time for this challenge. I want to achieve a lot with this club, in Europe too. During my time in Salzburg I watched a lot of Bayern games – I really like this club!”

Bayern’s sports director Hasan Salihamidzic’s all but confirmed the deal on Saturday, but was on hand to once again underline how big a move this was for the Munich side. “In Sadio Mané a top international star is coming to FC Bayern, who has left his mark on world football,” said Salihamidzic on the club website. “The fact that he’s joining FC Bayern shows that our club and he have big aims. Sadio Mané fits perfectly with the football that FC Bayern play under Julian Nagelsmann.”

The transfer will undoubtedly make waves in German football, which has long since relied on its reputation for preferring moves for younger players that can be developed into the stars of tomorrow. If the add-on fees are paid to Liverpool, Mané wil not only become the Munich’s side’s fifth most expensive signing ever but is also already the most expensive player over the age of 30 signed by Bayern.

Similarly, Mané departs Anfield as one of the club’s most high-profile departures in its modern history. Not only does the Senegal international’s sale confirm the break-up of Jürgen Klopp’s favoured front three of Mané, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino but also makes the forward the second most valuable player to leave. Philippe Coutinho, who departed for Barcelona in 2017 with a market value of €90m remains in first place, while Luis Suárez’s move to the Catalan giants in 2014 with a value of €52m moves into third place.
