Eintracht Frankfurt set to sign Mario Götze – Inter Miami CF and Benfica lose out

Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt are set to sign German World Cup winner Mario Götze from PSV. The attacking midfielder has an exit clause that allows him to leave his Eredivisie club for €4 million this summer. Several media in Germany reported on Sunday night that Götze has agreed on terms with Frankfurt and that the club’s supervisory board will meet on Monday to vote on the deal.

Those proceedings have now been concluded, paving the way for Götze’s return to Germany. It also means that the Portuguese side Benfica and Major League Soccer side Inter Miami CF have lost out.

Benfica, where Götze’s former head coach Roger Schmidt will take charge for the new season, have long led the race to sign Götze. But German magazine kicker reported on Friday that Eintracht Frankfurt had entered the race to sign the playmaker. The Eagles see Götze as a potential replacement for Daichi Kamada. Kamada has been linked with a transfer away from the Europa League winners.

Frankfurt won out as, unlike Benfica, the Bundesliga side is already qualified for the group stage of the upcoming UEFA Champions League season. In the spring, Götze told Sports Illustrated Germany that he aims to return to Europe’s most prestigious club competition. “It is my ambition to win the Champions League at one point,” Götze said. “It is something I would like to achieve but don’t have to achieve. I love that competition.”

Inter Miami CF want Götze – Champions League ambitions in the way?

Inter Miami CF were also interested in Götze. Transfermarkt understands that the Florida-based club tried to sign the scorer of Germany’s World Cup-winning goal ahead of the 2020 season, but Götze opted to stay in Europe. The Beckham-owned club, however, has not lost sight of Götze and remained interested. The 30-year-old’s Champions League ambitions meant a transfer was a long shot for now.
